Location

Alphonse Island lies in the heart of the Indian Ocean, 7° south of the Equator and 292 miles (470 km) southwest of the capital island, Mahé. It is part of the Alphonse Group, extending 10 miles (16 km) from north to south. Alphonse Island is a small, triangular-shaped coral island strewn with swaying coconut trees, with more than 2 miles (3.6 km) of coastline protected by a reef and offering the most idyllic setting for a very exclusive holiday.

Accommodation

The hotel is located on the east side of the island and features 25 chalets and 5 executive villas, built alongside the lagoon and the beach. It manages effortlessly to blend ecological awareness with first-class service. The design by Florence Masson, a South African decorator, offers a superb combination of deluxe accommodation, originality and a low-key island atmosphere. Each chalet is set on pillars with a thatched roof and a private veranda with an open-air shower. All are air-conditioned, attractively furnished and have a king-size bed (or twin beds on request), ensuite bathroom with bath, international direct access telephone, TV, mini-bar, ceiling fan and individual safe.

Dining

The Bijoutier Restaurant overlooks the lagoon and swimming pool. It offers refined and creative cooking, combining the best of local Creole specialties with international cuisine. Service is attentive yet relaxed and discreet, and the flexible menu makes provision for any special dietary requirements.

Activities

In addition to the beach and the freshwater swimming pool, there are numerous activities available for the non-fishing guests, carefully located so as not to encroach on the tranquil atmosphere of the hotel or disturb the island's “wilder” inhabitants. There is a range of water sports and some of the best scuba diving in the world. Activities include canoeing, often the best way to explore the Alphonse lagoon, pedalos, sailing using one of two Laser dinghies, snorkeling with equipment provided, and windsurfing. There is a tennis court and full-size snooker table.

Best time to travel

You should plan your trip to the Seychelles around what you want to do. Windsurfing and sailing are best at the start and end of the trade winds, usually around May and October. Diving is best in March, April, May, September, October and November.

Getting there

You can get to Alphonse on special flights from Mahé, which take just under one hour. There are flights on Sundays, Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays departing Mahé at 10:30 and returning to Mahé at 13:00.
