Situated in the magnificent Quirimbas
Archipelago, scuba diving at Matemo is considered as some of the best in
the world. A range of courses are offered at Matemo Island Resort from
Discover Scuba, Open Water and Advanced Open water, so whether you are a
novice or experienced diver, you can experience the magic of scuba diving
in the Quirimbas.
Diving Courses
All courses are conducted in accordance with PADI using PADI-specified
materials.
Discover Scuba is a beginner’s course for those
interested in scuba diving but would like to experience scuba diving
before enrolling in a full certification course. Discover Scuba is not a
certification course and only allows the guest, upon completion, to dive
at the resort with an instructor to a maximum of 10 meters. The course
itself is short and only takes a couple of hours to complete. The course
price includes the first dive. All subsequent dives are charged at normal
rates.
Open water is the first of the certification courses,
which allows guests to become certified divers and to be able to dive to a
maximum of 18 metres. The course itself is a combination of lectures,
reading of manuals, pool work and 5 qualifying dives. The course will take
at least 5 days to complete. The course price includes all equipment,
dives, air fills, reading material and the certification card upon
completion. Kindly note that most people are reluctant to spend so much of
their holiday time reading dive manuals and attending lectures - we would
suggest that guests do their coursework and pool sessions at a dive center
near their homes. When they come on holiday, they can bring an Instructor
referral and do the qualifying dives at the resort. This is a sanctioned
method of certification by PADI.
Advanced Open Water is more specialized in that it allows
divers to expand on their diving experience and allows them to dive deeper
at night and recognizes them as more proficient divers. The course itself
involves 5 dives, reading the manual about the specific dives and a
briefing / short lecture from the instructor regarding the dives about to
be made.
The course can be completed in two days. The course price includes all
equipment, dives; air fills, reading material and the certification card
upon completion.
Matemo Scuba Diving
The majority of our diving is done off the eastern side of Matemo Island.
All dives depart from the beach; either in front of the main public areas,
or in front of the activity center - depending on the weather. Dives are
scheduled with the guests on the day before. All equipment is obtainable
at the activity center and guests are advised to arrive at the activity
center 20 minutes before the scheduled time to prepare and check
equipment. All of the diving is done by boat - Gulfcraft dolphin 31’ - and
the dive leaders are all Instructor qualified to maintain the highest
standards. We carry emergency DAN O² cylinders on board. It should,
however, be mentioned that we don’t dive deeper than 30 meters and people
with dive computers will not be allowed to either share their computers
with their buddies nor dive their computers into decompression stops.
Fishing on Matemo Island
Fishing at Matemo can be enjoyed either by boat or from the beach. Our
fishing boats include a 31ft Gulfcraft. All fishing tackle is provided on
the fishing trips. Rods and reels are all of the highest quality. The game
fishing in the waters surrounding Matemo Island is nothing short of
spectacular. Game fish species found include Kingfish, Barracuda, Dorado,
Queenfish, Serra, Wahoo, Yellowfin Tuna and Sailfish. All billfish are
strictly catch-and-release. Fishing by boat is conducted either as a half
day (4 hours) of full day (8 hours) excursion. Both excursions include
fuel, skipper, tackle, bait and a limited amount of cool drinks. Alcoholic
beverages are available but will be charged on consumption at bar prices.
Shore fishing can be done either from the sand spit or the rocks below the
bar area. We have a limited supply of fishing equipment for shore fishing;
therefore it is on a first-come first-served basis.
Best time to travel
The best time to visit Mozambique is the
months of June to August, when both rainfall and temperatures are at their
lowest.
