Activities:
Dr Livingstone was the first
European to see the Victoria Falls in 1855. Known locally as
Mosi-Oa-Tunya or "the smoke that thunders" because of the spray made
by the mass of water dropping 100 meters below in the gorges.
Livingstone renamed the falls Victoria Falls in honour of Queen
Victoria. 50 Years later, missionaries and traders settled in the
small Zambian town of Livingstone and the railway bridge over the
Zambezi was built. The UNESCO proclaimed the Falls as a World
Heritage Site, due to its unique nature. Nowadays, the Victoria
Falls mark the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe.
The Victoria Falls and its surroundings offer a wide variety of
activities, of which we name a few:
Parks
around the Falls:
Around the Victoria Falls are some fine National Parks such as
Mosi-Oa-Tunya National Park (white rhino) and Chobe National Park
(Botswana) which can all be visited without checking out of Stanley
Safari Lodge.
An ideal way to visit the rhinoceros in the small Mosi-O-Tunya NP is
by doing a walking safari.
Chobe NP is home to the world's largest elephant population, which
represents a third of all African elephants and is ideal to visit
both by 4x4 vehicle as by boat. Besides game drives with comfortable
Land-Rover vehicles and experienced Bush Guides in the National
Parks close to the Victoria Falls, we also organise canoe safaris or
fishing trips on the Zambezi river. A lunch cruise or a sunset
cruise is a more relaxing way to enjoy the beauty of the mighty
Zambezi river.
Elephant ride:
Only very few places in the world offer you the possibility to ride
on the back of an African elephant.
This is an original way to discover the nature around the Victoria
Falls and offers a unique way to interact with the largest mammals
on earth.
African culture:
We are also eager to show you our neighbouring traditional village
which is over 700 years old and still ruled by its traditional
ruler, His Royal Highness Chief Mukuni, Monarch of the Victoria
Falls.
The Livingstone museum and the lively Maramba market is also worth a
visit.
Flight
of the Angels:
Scenes so lovely must be gazed upon by angels in their flight...
(David Livingstone, 1855). Experience the Victoria Falls from the
air with a Tigermoth or helicopter! It is also possible to play
Golf, at the colonial era Livingstone Royal Golf & Country Club.
Adrenaline Activities:
For the more adventurous, the gorges below the Victoria Falls offer
a wide range of possibilities. Just to name a few:
- The Zambezi offers some of the best Rafting in the world.
- Bungee jumping from the railway bridge has a unique setting just
besides the Falls
- Jet boating in the gorges is breathtaking
Other
National Parks:
Stanley Safari Lodge has excellent air & road connections and is an
excellent starting point for your Safari in Southern Africa (Zambia,
Botswana, Zimbabwe, Namibia). |
