Tucked away in the southeastern corner of Zimbabwe lies one of the finest private wildlife reserves in Africa. Secluded and very exclusive, Malilangwe Reserve is where you will discover an outstanding diversity of wildlife on 105,000 acres of sun-scorched, game-rich and untamed African bush.

buzzard.gif (11677 bytes)Malilangwe is one of the few remaining places in Africa where black and white rhino are still plentiful. It also hosts an extensive collection of Africa's great game animals including elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo, giraffe, painted hunting dog, zebra, cheetah, hyena, sable, wildebeest, hippopotamus, eland, kudu, impala, nyala, Lichtenstein's hartebeest and roan antelope.

With over 400 recorded species of birds and one of the highest concentrations of raptors in the world, Malilangwe is also a haven for bird enthusiasts.

Malilangwe actually means "Cry of the Leopard" in the local Shangaan language. The Reserve is named after the spectacular sculpted sandstone hills of that name which straddle it's heart. These wild hills are an unspoilt African treasure house of incredible diversity and beauty, comprising towering hills and secret valleys that have become a favorite haunt for leopards and black eagles.

The Reserve is owned by the Malilangwe Conservation Trust, a non-profit organization, whose aim is to create the finest wildlife reserve in Africa. The Trust is committed to creating a role model that may serve as an inspiration to other reserves in Africa. Revenues generated by tourism are channeled back into the Reserve and to the surrounding communities. It is also expected that the Reserve will, with time, become one of Zimbabwe's top research areas, as scientific studies are encouraged on the property.

In the interest of maintaining this pristine environment, the number of guests at Malilangwe is strictly limited at any one time.

Activities:

Early morning, afternoon and evening spotlight game drives in open 4WD vehicles, Walking safaris with fully licensed professional guides, Canoeing, Quality fishing, Visits to see local San (bushman) paintings, Day excursions to Gonarezhou National Park or golf on three very good local golf courses can be arranged at an extra cost.

The Wildlife:

Malilangwe Private Wildlife Reserve has the widest variety of mammals in Zimbabwe and Southern Africa. Characteristic species include The Big 5 (elephant, rhino (both species), lion, leopard and buffalo), giraffe, zebra, hyena, hippopotamus, Nyala, impala, kudu, painted hunting dog, waterbuck, Lichtenstein's hartebeest, roan and sable.
