Location:


The South Luangwa National Park covers approximately 9 050 square kilometres of the Luangwa Valley floor, which varies from about 500 to 800 metres above sea level. Near the banks of the Luangwa the land is fairly flat, and mostly covered with mature woodlands. There are few dense shrubberies but also open areas where beautiful tall trees stand, shading a mixture of small bushes and grassland.

The Luamfwa Concession is located in the wild and uncrowded southern sector of the Park. Whereas for the most part the Luangwa River forms the eastern boundary of the National Park, separating the protected area from communal land and game management areas where hunting takes place, in the remote southern sector it meanders westward and both banks are protected. It is here that our camps can be found, on sites that are situated on the banks of the Luangwa River in a unique section of this exceptional Park, imparting a feeling of remoteness and exclusivity.

South Luangwa is an essential compliment to a Zambian Safari and especially to the experience at our camps on the Busanga Plains in northern Kafue. Habitat, vegetation, game viewing and activities are all different and Lake Malawi is literally a stone's throw across the border to the east.
 

Accommodation:

Chinengwe Bush Camp is located in the Luamfwa concession in the southern sector of the South Luangwa National Park.

Accommodation comprises four reed and thatch rooms built on the banks of the Luangwa River. Each room is en suite and includes an indoor and outdoor shower.

The camp's dining and bar area are under a canopy of trees overlooking the Luangwa River and there is a plunge pool.
 

Activities:


Activities include game drives and game walks including a guided walking trail from Kalamu Tented Camp to Chinengwe Bush Camp or vice versa.

The highest concentration of wildlife is around the Luangwa River, with its rich vegetation. Wildlife includes huge herds of elephant and buffalo. The Park's dominant antelope species are impala and puku, with other antelope seen including the common waterbuck, bushbuck, eland, kudu, grysbok, oribi, reedbuck, Lichtenstein's hartebeest, sable and roan.

Unique species such as Thornicroft's giraffe and Cookson's wildebeest can also be seen. There are also hippo and crocodile, and the main predators are lion, leopard, spotted hyaena and wild dogs. Cheetah can also be seen in the area. Birdlife is prolific.
