Loisaba Wilderness - Mount Kenya Region

Location:

Northern Kenya, a new 150 square kilometer private wildlife conservancy situated on the edge of the Laikipia Plateau next to Kirimun, 70 kilometers north of Mount Kenya

The Wilderness:

The same size as the Ngorongoro crater and larger than many of Kenya’s principal National Parks. To the north lie the grassy plains of the plateau; to the south, the plateau break into valleys, cliffs and escarpments that frame astounding views up to the snows of Mount Kenya.

At their base lies a different riverine ecosystem fed by the banks of two major rivers – the Ewaso Ng’iro and the Engare Narok. The wilderness is a haven for more than 250 species of birds and 50 species of wildlife. Alongside all the more usual types, elephant, buffalo, Grevy's Zebra and Greater Kudu abound.

The area is also rapidly gaining a reputation for exceptional big cat sightings; even Wild Dog, thought for many years to be extinct in the region are now being regularly sighted. Situated in the very heartland of the nomadic Samburu and Laikipia Masai people, Loisaba also offers a rare insight into people cultures, traditions and a way of life that has stood the test of time.

Accommodation:

The Lodge:

Constructed from stone, cedar and thatch, the lodge is perched high on the edge of the plateau looking south towards Mount Kenya. Each room has large wooden French windows that open onto a private deck cantilevered off the escarpment.

The views defy description, and a thousand feet below a water hole draws continuous wildlife visitors. All the furniture in the lodge is handmade at Loisaba.

The lodge was chosen by Prince Bernhard and Princess Juliana of the Netherlands as the venue to celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary together with the entire Dutch royal family.

The Skybeds:

The Loisaba Skybeds are unique. Each skybed (one of 4 to each site) is a raised, handcrafted wooden platform sculpted high into a kopje of rocks and semi-covered with a thatched roof.

Homemade natural futon beds can either be moved out onto the uncovered area for a night under the stars, or left under the shelter of the roof and drop down canvass walls.

The skybeds are normally reached on foot or by horse or camel. Food is prepared in traditional camp style over a fire at the open walled, central mess area.

Lodge:

7 rooms, 4 doubles and 3 twins. One room has a separate sitting room that can double as a further bedroom. Each room has an en-suite bathroom – 4 with showers and 3 with bath and shower. The lodge has a swimming pool and tennis court.

Skybeds:

4 sleeping platforms per site. Each platform is designed for 1 or 2 people but can easily accommodate a third bed. Each platform has a flush loo and large camp-style drum showers. Each platform is sited to ensure complete privacy.
